- Web Security Services: Delegating Security Responsibility to the Cloud
-
Few readers need to be told that the Internet is a dangerous place. Anyone in the IT field is aware that viruses, spam, and malicious Web sites exist. Knowledge of these attacks and vulnerabilities was the domain of specialized security gurus just a few years ago. But the need to understand computer security has spread beyond the domain of specialists. Today, even IT end users need to be aware of threats and countermeasures to some degree.
- Using Web Security Services to Protect Portable Devices
-
Today's workforce is a security challenge. Employees no longer follow strict guidelines from the IT department regarding computer use at work, computer security measures, personal computing devices used for work, and so on. In fact, many CxO's find that the stricter the rules, the less employees pay attention, leading to even less IT control of the computer infrastructure.
- Can You Trust a Cloud-based Security Solution?
-
Cloud computing and security services seem like they would never go together. The former is a function that exists somewhere outside the host, outside the network, and is tapped when needed to perform a certain function such as data archival. The latter is a mindset, an approach that pervades throughout every facet of an IT infrastructure.
- Clyde Consulting: Beyond the Wall: Security in a Post-Perimeter World
-
Walls have served multiple purposes throughout history. The Great Wall of China defended against invaders, while the Berlin Wall kept citizens from freely traveling beyond the control of their rulers. Network security relies on similar premises. For years network security professionals touted "perimeter security" as the primary solution to keep the bad guys out and the good guys in. However, just as guns and air attacks overcame protective walls, changes in malware attacks have rendered network firewalls and perimeter-centric security an ineffective defense. Simultaneously, the increasingly mobile workforce makes an on-premise approach even more futile. Walls can no longer keep the bad guys out, nor can they keep the good guys in. Welcome to the post-perimeter world.

- Osterman Research: The Critical Need to Secure the Web in Your Company
-
There has been an enormous increase in malicious Web-borne content, including user generated content posted to
traditionally good Web sites, email messages that contain links to dangerous or newly compromised Web sites,
attachments that are little more than stage-one downloaders of other malicious code from the Web, malware that
installs and opens a communication channel to the attacking source, and other exploits. This white paper, by Osterman
Research addresses the key issues surrounding
corporate Web security and the need for organizations of all sizes to implement
robust Web security processes and technologies.

-
The most recent State of Internet Security focuses on Protecting the Perimeter. Many fundamental business activities - marketing, advertising, customer support, research - are Web dependent. Increasingly, the Web is now considered the number one delivery method for malware which poses a significant security challenge to businesses of all sizes. Webroot conducted a survey of
business Web security decision makers in the US, UK, Australia and Canada and found that while the Web is widely understood as the primary attack vector, businesses still have gaping holes in their security strategy. - University of Missouri

-
-
The University of Missouri's department of Residential Life has 230 computers managed by only two IT staff. The machines were becoming riddled with viruses due to personal web surfing. The malware infections were coming in so fast that machines were being rendered unusable. Already strapped for resources, the team rebuilt one to two machines per week, leaving no time for other duties. Justin Harris, User Support Analyst, understood the need for adding layered protection in the cloud: "Our endpoint security used to be enough, but it can't keep up against today's threats. We still need it for remediation, but we needed that extra layer of defense at the perimeter. Each level catches more than the last," Leiss explains. "The web is the new battleground for security and we needed a web filtering solution."
