Webroot Unveils Email Archiving and Web Security Services in the Cloud to Protect Business Data, Enhance Compliance

Leader in SaaS Security Rolls out New Archiving Service and Advanced Security Features to Thwart Information-Stealing Malware Attacks and Web 2.0 Threats

Boulder, CO – December 1, 2009

Webroot, the industry’s fastest-growing Web security software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendor, today announced the availability of a new email archiving service to help businesses meet industry and regulatory compliance standards and support e-discovery requirements. The company also introduced an enhanced version of its Web security service that includes new, proprietary techniques to thwart data-stealing malware, Web 2.0 threats and attackers using an increasingly complex array of Web-based attack methods.

With the explosion in email volume and increasingly strict regulations for e-discovery requests, email archiving is a critical security requirement for organizations of all sizes. The new Webroot® Email Archiving Service is a SaaS solution designed to meet and exceed a company’s email archiving needs. The cloud-based email archiving service enhances security and provides e-discovery and mailbox management – without the significant financial costs and internal IT resources of a traditional hardware or software-based system.

The latest release of the Webroot Web Security Service features new outbound malware scanning to prevent outbound "phone-home" connections where malware attempts to send confidential data to a hacker's machine, updated real-time threat detection heuristics and significant reporting and logging enhancements. The enhanced real-time threat analysis increases detection of polymorphic viruses and other malicious code, cross site scripting (XSS) attacks and more advanced monitoring capabilities. These new features are designed to fend off new variants of exploits attackers launch in real-time to evade detection.

"Webroot's Web and email services protect our business data, employees, network and multiple offices from data-stealing malware, spear-phishing attacks and other threats," said David Naylor, IT security coordinator, Texas Trust Credit Union. "We consider the Webroot security SaaS solution a key component of our business' security strategy. We switched to Webroot from an existing software solution to better support our distributed offices and to receive superior threat protection and automated updates when enhancements come out. The new reporting and logging capabilities in this latest version are stellar."

Webroot Security Services Address Emerging, Complex Threats

Webroot delivers a comprehensive range of cloud-based security services to business customers that encompass Web security, email security, email archiving, as well as endpoint protection. These services keep up with emerging threats, including:

  • Attackers targeting SMBs for confidential data -- According to the FBI, email phishing attacks and malicious Trojans targeting public institutions and small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) have led to approximately $100 million in attempted losses in the past several months.
  • Cybercriminals using increasingly complex methods to attack data – such as email to distribute malicious Web links, manipulating SEO by placing malicious links near the top of search results for breaking news stories, social engineering tactics employing fake security alerts and rogue antivirus products.
  • Web 2.0, social media sites and seemingly trusted Web sites - those with good reputations - are attacker's latest playground. For example, cybercriminals often post content to sites like Facebook and Twitter using shortened URL services that mask links to malicious sites.

"The new Webroot email archiving service and enhanced Web security service represent our commitment to innovation and rapid delivery of service enhancements to keep business data secure," said Don Beck, Sr. VP and General Manager, SaaS Business Unit, Webroot. "Our SaaS approach to security lets us automatically roll out enhancements to our entire user base for better protection from emerging threats - allowing customers to avoid costly and time-intensive upgrade cycles that traditional security vendors require."

Webroot offers a complete suite of security products and services that allow customers to protect networks against malware threats; to manage security and acceptable use policies; to comply with internal, industry and regulatory security and use policies; and to analyze logs, reports, and data to ensure security and compliance. Delivered as a service, the Webroot Web Security, Email Security and Archiving Services reduce total cost of ownership, keep threats from ever reaching the corporate network and require no additional hardware or software investment.
