Why Your Mac is Not Immune

As trivial (and tired) as it may be, it's still every brand loyalists' favorite, feather-ruffling question: Are you a Mac or a PC?

While your answer may place you in one culture camp or another, it's no longer indicative of your computer's safety or security. Contrary to the long-held popular belief, your Mac (we're sorry to say) is not immune.

Proof in the Pudding

While many Mac users have enjoyed a long run of virtually virus-free computing, the myth of an impenetrable operating system has created a false sense of security—a fact thousands of Mac users finally came to realize through the unprecedented attacks of the past year.

After last spring's MacDefender Trojan attack, Apple released a security update to help users rid their systems of any unsafe files. Then, thanks to an unpatched Java flaw in the Mac operating system, the Flashback virus affected hundreds of thousands, under the guise of an Adobe Flash update. Both incidents should serve as a wake-up call to Apple users who still think they're invulnerable to malicious attacks.

Stepping Up Your Security

Simply put, the larger a company's market share, the more enticing an attack becomes, so as Apple products continue to grow in popularity, criminals may see Mac users as increasingly viable targets. So what can you do to defend yourself?

The tried and true rules of cyber security still apply—be wary of too-good-to-be-true offers, don't click or download anything you're not 100% sure about, and be sure you're browsing on a secure site when dealing with anything financial. But your most sure line of defense is to take a cue from security-savvy PC users—it's likely time to bite the bullet and purchase security software.

Lucky for you, Webroot's entire SecureAnywhere™ product suite is now Mac compatible, so you can enjoy all of your devices—no matter the brand—with award-winning protection and peace of mind.
